Controlling Desktop Sounds In GNU Gnome

I recently enabled the mail notification tool in the GNU Gnome Panel under Linux, and, having enabled desktops sounds in order to receive an audible alert upon receipt of new mail, was faced with the problem that many of these sounds are quite annoying.
