Canon announced the EOS 30D a few days ago at PMA 2006, this years Photo Marketing Association convention.

A PDF of the official Canon announcement is available here.

The EOS 30D will be a successor to the EOS 20D, retaining its 8.2MP APS-C sensor, DIGIC II processing and 5 fps capability, but adding the following new features in common with the EOS 5D:

  • 2.5″ 230,000 pixel LCD vs 1.8″ 110,000 pixel LCD.
  • Spot metering.
  • ISO setting is visible in viewfinder.
  • ISO 3200 expansion.
  • 100,000 shot shutter lifetime.

A few new features differ slightly vs the EOS 20D or EOS 5D:

  • 30 frame JPEG burst rate (vs 23/60 frames on the EOS 20D/5D).
  • 11 frame RAW burst rate (vs 6/17 frames on the EOS 20D/5D)
  • 0.15 second startup time (0.2s on the EOS 20D and EOS 5D.

Unfortunately there is no mention of mirror-lockup …..

The EOS 30D will be available for purchase sometime in March priced around $1499.
