I have been using a 5D for a few months, and the price/performance ratio of this camera is quite amazing.

I am a (mid-level) amateur photographer and have used both Canon (AE1) and Nikon (F1) film SLRs since the early 80s. The EOS Rebel was my first DSLR. In Deceember 2005 I upgraded to the 20D. I am about to purchase the 5D with the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lense (primary), instead of the 24-105mm L lense which is being offered with the body. I intend to keep the 20D with the excellent EFS 10-22mm lense as primary. The reviews above were very helpful. Thank you!

The one thing that I can't get past on the 5D is how clean the ISO is. I shot in the dark with it at iso 1600 and still got wonderful images.

Tony,

It looks like you will get your dust removal with the introduction of the 400D/Digital Rebel XTi.

A friend of mine just bought the 30D too. He is very happy. It is a great camera, especially for nature/sports shooters.

I'm planning on getting into bird photography but am so stuck on full frame I will do it by spending heaps more money on a more powerful zoom than I would need with APS-C.

Best,

James

I wish that Canon came out with a water and dust resistant Camera instead of coming out with an expensive full frame sensor such as the 5D

I recently upgraded from a 350D to a 30D and I like the better build quality of the 30D. I guess Canon listened in on the suggestions of the pros like Bob Atkins and Fred Miranda to come out with a compromise camera such as the 30D. I appeciate your expert advise which influenced me to buy the 30D instead of saving more money to buy the 5D. With the savings, I indeed was able to buy 3 lenses namely, the Tokina 12-24 F4, the Tamron XR Di 24-70, and the Canon EF 70-200 F4. I still had the extra money to buy a decent backpack.

Thanks for this post. I'm right on the cusp (I have to order today to get the rebate) of getting a 5D. I'm a happy 20D owner with a bag of very nice lenses but I'd like the improved ISO range and better color saturation. My 20D is working fine, although has seen a lot of use and I thought it would be useful to have a second body. However, my guess is that Canon will update the 5D in the next 6 months and maybe I ought to hold off. Opinions?
