This testimony was presented in support of authorization for NASA beginning the construction of the Space Telescope, which later became known as the Hubble Space Telescope. The testimony was given before the authorization and appropriation committees of both houses of congress.

This hearing was held in response to the discovery of the aberration in the Hubble mirror. My testimony, reproduced here, described the implications of the mirror flaw for science and the determination of the scientists to help find a solution to the problem. It was a traumatic period for everyone involved with the HST.
