PARTICIPANTS WILL BE GIVEN A WELCOME PACKET AT REGISTRATION CONTAINING DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND THEIR STAY AT THE INSTITUTE.  BELOW WE HAVE SUMMARIZED KEY POINTS OF INTEREST, HOWEVER PARTICIPANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CAREFULLY REVIEW THEIR PACKET CONTENTS UPON ARRIVAL FOR UP-TO-DATE AND COMPLETE DETAILS.

Arrival & Registration

Registration will be on Sunday, July 18 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Bloomberg Hall Common Room
, during which time drinks and sandwiches will be available. (See Maps below for a map of the Institute Campus.)  

A final Program Schedule,
an Institute Access/Identification Card, an apartment key (as appropriate) and a Welcome Packet containing many other important Program materials will be given to you at Registration.  Please remember that participants staying in an Institute apartment must pay for their housing upon arrival, in the form of cash or a check made payable to the Institute for Advanced Study (payment must be in U.S. Dollars and no credit cards can be accepted.)

If you are coming in on a shuttle
from Newark, JFK or Philadelphia Airport, or by taxi from the Princeton Junction or Trenton train stations, you should be dropped off at Fuld Hall on Einstein Drive on the Institute for Advanced Study campus (the main administration building with the clock tower)If you walk through the lobby and Common Room of Fuld Hall and exit out the back of the building, Bloomberg Hall will be to your left. If you are coming by car, park in lot A and Bloomberg Hall is the building that faces the entrance to lot A.

If you arrive at the Institute before 2:00 p.m. on July 18, your apartment key will be held with the Public Safety Officer at the Reception Desk which is located immediately on your right as you enter Fuld Hall (the main building with the clock tower). If the Officer is not at Reception (behind the glass window) when you arrive, please use the phone on the desk in the lobby and dial 5460. If you reach voicemail, please leave a message and the Officer will come to Fuld Hall to assist you, generally within 20 minutes of your call. Please give the Officer your name, tell him that you are a participant in the Physics Program, and let him know you would like to pick up your apartment key. Please note, you are still required to come to Registration Sunday afternoon to receive your Welcome Packet and turn in your housing payment.

If you plan to arrive after 8:00 p.m. on July 18, or if travel delays unexpectedly cause you to arrive after 8:00 p.m., your registration materials and apartment key will be held with the Public Safety Officer at the Reception Desk located immediately on your right as you enter Fuld Hall (the main building with the clock tower). If the Officer is not at Reception (behind the glass window) when you arrive, please use the phone on the desk in the lobby and dial 5460. If you reach voicemail, please leave a message and the Officer will come to Fuld Hall to assist you, generally within 20 minutes of your call. Please give the Officer your name, tell him that you are a participant in the Physics Program, and let him know you would like to pick up your apartment key. You also may ask the Officer to drive you with your luggage to your on-campus apartment. Please note, your housing payment would then be required to be turned in to the Program Business Office on Monday morning (see Business Office & Staff below).

Business Office & Staff

The office for the PiTP Program will be located on the first floor of Bloomberg Hall (BH-186). There will be signs posted in the building to direct you, and the office staff may be reached from any campus or apartment phone by dialing extension 8198. Please call or come to see us if you have any questions or concerns during your stay. Office hours will be weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and you may also send e-mail to Susan Higgins' attention at: shiggins@ias.edu.

Check Cashing Service or Automated Teller Machine

Personal and traveler's checks, up to $200, may be cashed at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall any weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  If you need an Automated Teller Machine, there is not one on campus but there is one at the WaWa convenience store next to the Princeton train station (about a 25-minute walk from the Institute), and it is open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week (140 University Place, 1-609-921-3677)
(see the Map of the Princeton Area under Maps below; the WaWa is located next to the Princeton train station, marked as point "C" on the map).  There is also a Chase Bank branch with an Automated Teller Machine inside the ShopRite where we will be taking participants to do grocery shopping on Monday evenings (Mercer Mall, Route 1 South & Quaker Bridge Road, 1-609-275-8555), or if you prefer, across the parking lot from that ShopRite there is a Bank of America branch office with an Automated Teller Machine, as well. 

Common Rooms on Campus

The Fuld Hall Common Room is open to PiTP participants 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. There is an excellent selection of domestic and foreign newspapers and periodicals in this room; you are welcome to enjoy these publications, but please note that many of them are marked with a request that they NOT be removed from the Common Room. PiTP participants also are allowed to use the Bloomberg Hall Common Room
24-hours a day, 7-days a week, but you will need to use your Institute Access/Identification Card to enter this building in the evenings or on the weekends. Please note that the kitchen area of Bloomberg Hall Common Room is NOT open to PiTP participants, however; it is reserved for use by Institute Members and Faculty only.

Computer Access & Personal Computer Equipment

Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop to the program.  Students coming from outside of the United States should be sure to bring a power converter and plug adapter that is compatible with the United States' electrical system, so that you are able to re-charge your laptop battery. If for any reason you are unable to bring your own laptop, and you did not already note this on your Travel Form, please notify Susan Higgins NO LATER THAN MONDAY, JULY 5TH (see her contact information in the Business Office & Staff section above). We will have two desktop machines available in the Bloomberg Hall Common Room and four in the Physics Library on the second floor of Bloomberg Hall for shared use by those who cannot bring a laptop with them.  The Physics Library will be open from 7:00 a.m. to midnight daily. Please note: no food, beverages or smoking will be permitted in the Physics Library.

Use of your laptop (or other personal computing device) on the Institute network requires completion of a small registration procedure. Details will be provided in your Welcome Packet, which will be given to you upon your arrival. 

The Institute campus, excluding the lecture hall (Wolfensohn Hall), offers wireless service, and there are a limited number of data ports located in the Bloomberg Hall Common Room for your use.  Apartments also offer wireless service, and there is a data port in the den area of each apartment. 

If you have any trouble with the public desktops or with connecting your laptop to the network, our computing staff will be available weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to help you.  You may call them at extension 8030 or email them at help@sns.ias.edu.

Police-Fire-Medical: Dial 9-911 from any campus or apartment phone.

Critical Maintenance Problem: (electrical, plumbing, heating, mechanical, locked out of apartment) Weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. call the Program Office at Extension 8198; evenings and weekends, dial extension 5460 from any campus or apartment phone (dial 1-609-947-5940 if calling from any off campus or personal cell phone).

Fax and Mail Service

There is a fax machine in the Reception Office on the first floor of Fuld Hall. The incoming fax number is 609-924-8399.
If you are expecting to receive a fax during your stay, please make sure that it is addressed to you "in care of: Susan Higgins," and please note that faxes received in the evening or over the weekend will not be able to be given to you until the following business day. The Receptionist also is available to send faxes out for you weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A fax cover page must accompany all requests for fax transmittals; a supply of the cover pages may be found at the Reception desk. There is a charge for outgoing faxes.

U.S. and overseas postage stamps may be purchased at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall. There is outgoing mail collection from this office several times a day. There is a Mail Information Center in the hallway of the lower level of Fuld Hall, (this wing of Fuld is also referred to as Building B, see #3 on the Campus Map under Maps below), where you will find a postage scale for weighing letters and small parcels. Airbills, envelopes, and information for express mail services are located in this area, as well, along with train and bus schedules. 

If you are expecting to receive mail during your stay, please make sure that it is address to you "in care of: Susan Higgins, Institute for Advanced Study, Einstein Drive, Princeton, NJ 08540."

Ground Transportation to the Institute

The Institute for Advanced Study is located in Princeton, New Jersey approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of New York City and 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Philadelphia.

If traveling by plane, Newark International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport are both approximately one hour from Princeton. Both airports have train transportation from the airport to Princeton, however it is easier and more direct from Newark Airport. Also, the "Olympic Airporter" shuttle offers economical ground transportation service directly between Newark Airport or JFK Airport and the Institute. Detailed information about nearby airports and transportation to/from airports can be found on the Institute website at: http://www.admin.ias.edu/as/transport_airports.php  If you decide to use the "Olympic Airporter," please be certain to make reservations in advance, as sometimes their vans fill up.

If traveling by train, you may take AMTRAK or NEW JERSEY TRANSIT into the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station (or if the AMTRAK schedule into "Princeton Junction" is not convenient, you also could take AMTRAK to the "Trenton, New Jersey" station and then take a NEW JERSEY TRANSIT train into the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station). From the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station, you may either take a taxi cab to the Institute (at a cost of about $20) or you may take the New Jersey Transit shuttle train (sometimes referred to as the "DINKY") from the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station to the "Princeton, New Jersey" station, and then you may walk to the Institute from there (about a 25-minute walk - see the Walking Directions from Princeton Station. NOTE: the streets are not well-lit, so if you will be walking in the evening, you may wish to bring a flashlight with you).

If driving to the Institute, please see: Driving Directions.  Participants will find free parking available near each apartment, as well as in Lot A on Campus (which is located next to both Bloomberg Hall and Wolfensohn Hall.)  No parking sticker is required.

Housing

Program participants will be housed in Institute apartments on a shared basis, as appropriate. Smoking is NOT permitted in the Institute apartments. Apartments are self-housekeeping, air-conditioned, have full baths (bathtub and shower) and have a full kitchen (including gas stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator, coffee-maker, teapot, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, and a basic supply of cooking utensils). Linens, towels, and blankets are provided. We provide hairdryers in the units, however we suggest you pack your own alarm clock. Tthere are no televisions in the apartments. Apartments have computer connections in the den, as well as wireless capabilities (for details, see your Welcome Packet).
For students coming from outside of the United States, please be certain to bring a power converter and plug adapter, also, that is compatible with the United States' electrical system. Please remember that only registered program participants are allowed to stay in the campus housing; no overnight guests will be permitted.  

If you encounter any problems with your apartment, please call Andy Compton in the housing office (telephone extension 8230). If calling in the evenings or on the weekend, please leave a voicemail and you can expect your concern to be addressed on the following business day. For an electrical, plumbing, heating or mechanical emergency that occurs in the evening or over the weekend, or if you find yourself locked out of your apartment in the evening or over the weekend, please call the Public Safety Officer on duty by dialing extension 5460 from any campus or apartment phone (or dial 1-609-947-5940 if calling from an off campus or personal cell phone). If you wish to exchange your used linens or towels for a clean set, or if you need additional cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet tissue or kleenex for your apartment, please go directly to the housing office (located in the Activities Center - see the Campus Map in the Maps section below). The housing office will be open weekdays from 8:00-9:00 a.m. or from 4:00-5:00 p.m. for these services.

Participants will be held responsible for any damages to an apartment that may occur during their stay at the Institute.

Laundry

There is a self-service laundry facility in the Activities Center of the Institute Housing Complex (see the Campus Map in the Maps section below). To use the machines, you must first purchase a laundry card from the Reception Office in Fuld Hall (open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). The cards cost $10.00, which includes a $3.00 deposit (which you will receive back when you return the card) and $7.00 for laundry services. Cards must be returned to the Reception Office before 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30th, at which time you will receive your $3.00 deposit back, plus a refund of any money remaining on the card from the original $7.00 laundry credit.

If you forget either to bring laundry detergent with you or to buy it on the Monday trip to the grocery store, there is a vending machine located in the Activities Center where you can purchase small boxes of detergent.

Dress Code

Dress is informal during the Program, however there will be one dinner hosted by the Institute's Director, Dr. Peter Goddard, and Mrs. Helen Goddard, for which you may wish to bring something less casual (but definitely no suits, ties or formal wear are needed.) You should pack a pair of sneakers or walking shoes for trips into town or walks in the Institute woods.  We also suggest you bring an umbrella, in case of inclement weather, and a sweater or light jacket to wear in case you find the temperature in the lecture hall cooler than you prefer.  We have arranged for access to a pool one evening, as well, so we encourage you to bring a swimsuit with you.

Institute Access/Identification Cards

Each participant will receive an Institute Access/Identification Card and a Name Badge, both of which should be kept with you at all times. The Access/Identification Card identifies you as being part of the program and will allow you access into buildings in the evenings and over the weekend. The card will give you access to Bloomberg Hall, the Mathematics-Natural Sciences Library in Fuld Hall, the Activities Center and Laundry Room in the Housing Complex, and the Tennis Courts. To use the card, place it face down in the card reader outside the entrance of each building or room. In some instances you may need to use the card to exit areas, as well. Access/Identification Cards must be returned to the Program Business Office before you leave the Institute.

Library Resouces

The holdings of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library are presently in three locations - on the second floor of Fuld Hall and in the Astrophysics and Physics libraries on the second floor of Bloomberg Hall.
Your Institute Access/Identification Card will allow you 24-hour access to the various locations.  Please check the online catalog of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library for holdings and location of books and journals.  Electronic resources at Princeton University are accessible via the link on the homepage of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library.  Books and bound periodicals may be taken to an office on campus but must remain on Institute premises. To borrow a book, please sign both cards found in the back of the volume, indicate "PiTP2010" next to your name, and leave the cards in the tray provided. Momota Ganguli (telephone extension 8181), Librarian, is in the Fuld Hall Library from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Please see her or Judy Wilson-Smith (telephone extension 8180), Library Assistant, if you need any help.

Meals, Groceries and Vending Machines with beverages and snacks

Participants will be given lunch tickets to use in the Institute Dining Hall on each weekday of the Program.  Weekday lunch tickets will entitle the holder to receive specified menu items at no charge; participants will be responsible for the cost of any food purchased in variation from, or in addition to, the items listed on the ticket. LOST TICKETS CANNOT BE REPLACED, SO ONCE YOU RECEIVE THEM AT REGISTRATION, PLEASE BE CERTAIN TO KEEP THEM IN A SAFE PLACE AND BRING THEM WITH YOU TO THE DINING HALL EACH DAY.  Lunch is served cafeteria style. 

Participants are responsible for their own weekday breakfasts and dinners, and for all weekend meals (with the exception of two dinners hosted by the program - see Recreational/Athletic/Social Activities below).  If you wish, you may purchase weekday breakfasts in the Institute Dining Hall (cash purchases only; served between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.) There are many restaurants in the center of Princeton and on Route 1 (a listing of local restaurants will be in the Welcome Packet), and a WaWa convenience store is located within a 25-minute walk of the campus (
140 University Place, 1-609-921-3677, see the map of the Princeton area under Maps above; the WaWa is located next to the Princeton train station, marked as point "C" on the map).  In addition, Institute apartments are equipped with full kitchens and a grocery shuttle service will be offered to a ShopRite grocery store on the evenings of Monday, July 19 and Monday, July 26 (located at Mercer Mall, Route 1 South & Quaker Bridge Road, 1-609-275-8555, additional information on this grocery shuttle service will be in the Welcome Packet).

Vending machines with beverages and snacks are located in the lower level of Fuld Hall and in the Activities Center in the Housing Complex.

Medical

In case of a life-threatening medical emergency: Dial 9-911 from any campus or apartment phone.

Non-Critical Care: If you fall ill or experience a minor injury, and it is between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on a weekday, you are encouraged to consult with the Human Resources Staff in Fuld Hall (office #102) (dial extension 8243 from any campus phone), who will be able to explain the medical treatment options available through the University Medical Center. If you decide to be seen in a non-emergency situation, you will be directed to the Occupational Medicine area of the hospital for treatment either that day or on the next business day (the Occupational Medicine hours are weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).  There, you will be asked to pay the bill and are advised to bring a credit card with you.  This area of the hospital does not send bills to your insurance carrier.  You can request an itemized bill with appropriate codes so that you can submit your own insurance claim to your private insurance plan if you wish.

If it is a weekday in the late afternoon/evening or on a weekend, you may wait to consult Human Resources on the next business morning, or if you feel the need is critical, you have two options:

#1 The Princeton Primary and Urgent Care Center in Princeton Junction is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to Noon. They are located at 707 Alexander Road and they can be reached by calling 1-609-919-0009.The Urgent Care Center is about a 10-minute car ride away, and if you call a taxi (see Transportation in Princeton section below for taxi company phone numbers) the cost would be approximately $15-20 each way. Please also note that you will need to be prepared to pay for the visit at the time of service, and should bring a credit card with you, in case they are not able to bill your private insurance plan directly. 

# 2 The closest Hospital Emergency Room is located at the University Medical Center at Princeton (253 Witherspoon Street, Princeton, 1-609-497-4000). Please note: an Emergency Room visit can be very expensive, and any costs incurred will be the responsibility of the participant or his/her insurance company. You should have available your medical insurance card and information if you decide to visit the Emergency Room.

Avoiding Lyme Disease: Exposure to deer ticks can be a serious problem, as they may carry Lyme disease.  It is helpful to avoid sitting in grassy areas or walking around without shoes.  Lyme disease typically is first noticeable as a bulls-eye rash. If you feel feverish, sore, or have general flu symptoms, check yourself for any signs of this rash.  As Lyme disease can be present even without a visible rash, however, if you have flu-like symptoms, you may wish to consult a physician.  You can find more detailed information about Lyme disease at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease

Local Pharmacies: There is a Pharmacy Department located within the ShopRite grocery store where we will be taking participants who wish to go grocery shopping on the evenings of Monday, July 19 and Monday, July 26 (located at Mercer Mall, Route 1 South & Quaker Bridge Road, 1-609-275-8555).  In addition, there is a CVS Pharmacy in downtown Princeton (172 Nassau Street, at the corner of Washington Road, 1-609-683-1391); the store is open 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., however the pharmacy section has reduced hours on the weekends - it is open Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.  The Princeton Pharmacy also is nearby, located on the first floor of the University Store (36 University Place, 1-609-924-4545). Its hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Princeton Pharmacy is not open on Sundays in the summer.

Messages and Notices

A PiTP bulletin board will be located in Bloomberg Hall Common Room, and messages to participants, notices about special activities, etc. will be posted there. Please be certain to check the bulletin board a few times every day. Program schedule changes or other important announcements also will be posted on 
our web site's Schedule page.

Parking at the Institute

Participants will find free parking available near each apartment, as well as in Lot A on Campus (which is located next to Bloomberg Hall, and near the lecture hall, Wolfensohn Hall.)  No parking sticker is required.

Photocopy Machines

Although we do not encourage participants to plan to use Institute copiers while they are here, if you need to make copies of critical documents during your stay, please come to the Program Business Office in Bloomberg Hall (open weekdays 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). 

Recreational/Athletic/Social Activities

Program Dinners:
Dr. Peter Goddard, Director of the Institute, and his wife Mrs. Helen Goddard will host a Buffet Dinner in the Dining Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of Wednesday, July 21.  The Goddards also will host a Pizza and Pool Party at Olden Farm (97 Olden Lane), from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the evening of Wednesday, July 28 (for the location of Olden Farm, see building #15 on the Campus Map found under Maps above).

Athletic/Recreational Activities: The Institute's tennis courts will be available to Program participants (you must provide your own racquets and tennis balls). The tennis courts are located off Goldman Lane near the children's playground (see the Map of Institute Housing under the Maps section above). You will need to use your Access/Identification Card to gain entrance to the courts.  We also will have a limited number of frisbees, soccer balls, basketballs and volleyballs in the Program Office which we will lend out to individuals who wish to organize informal frisbee, soccer, basketball or volleyball games with their fellow PiTP participants. The soccer field is located on the path that runs from Olden Lane to Parking Lot A (see the Campus Map under the Maps section above), and the basketball and volleyball courts are located off Goldman Lane near the children's playground (see the Map of Institute Housing under the Maps section above).  The Institute woods provide many paths for those who wish to take a walk or a run during their free time, as well (see Institute woods map).  

Suggested Weekend Activities:  There are no scheduled program activities over the weekend of July 24-25; participants are free to make their own plans for these two days.  Information about select activities occuring in the Princeton area over that weekend will be posted under a link on our web site's Schedule page.  We also will include flyers in the Welcome Packet and post details on our bulletin board in Bloomberg Hall.  

Schedule of Program Events

You will receive a copy of the program schedule in your Welcome Packet. It also is posted on our web site (see Schedule). All lectures will be given in Wolfensohn Hall unless otherwise noted. Any unexpected and last minute changes to the schedule will be posted on the web site and a flyer placed on the bulletin board in Bloomberg Hall.

Telephone Use

The telephone in your apartment is set up for internal on-campus calls, and to allow you to call outside the Institute to the local Emergency number of "911" (see Emergency section above). If you wish to make other local calls or any long distance calls, you will need to use a calling card or a personal cell phone.
 Public pay phones are located in Fuld Hall and the Dining Hall. For futher details, see the "Housing Complex Telephone System" flyer that will be included in your Welcome Packet.

Transportation in Princeton

The Institute provides a free shuttle van service between the Institute and Palmer Square in the center of the town of Princeton. Scheduled service runs Monday through Friday, with an abbreviated schedule on Saturday mornings. The van also makes stops at a few other locations; for details, see the Institute shuttle schedule that will be included in your Welcome Packet, or look on-line at Shuttle Schedule.
