Arrival & Registration

Registration will be on Sunday, July 16 from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Bloomberg Hall Common Room, during which time drinks and sandwiches will be available. (See Maps below for a map of the Institute Campus.)

If you are coming in on the AIRPORTER from Newark or JFK airports, NJ PASS RIDE from Philadelphia Airport, or by taxi from the Princeton Junction or Trenton train stations, you should be dropped off at Fuld Hall (building with clock tower) at the Institute for Advanced Study. If you walk through the lobby and Common Room of Fuld Hall and exit out the back of the building, Bloomberg Hall will be to your left. If you are coming by car, park in lot A and Bloomberg Hall is the building that faces the entrance to lot A. A final Program schedule, lunch meal tickets, an Institute Access card, an apartment key (as appropriate) and other important materials will be given to you at registration. Please remember that you must pay for your housing upon your arrival, in the form of cash or a check made payable to the Institute for Advanced Study (no credit cards can be accepted.)

If you arrive at the Institute before 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, your apartment key will be held with the Public Safety Officer at the Reception Desk which is located immediately on your right as you enter Fuld Hall (building with the clock tower). If the Officer is not at Reception (behind the glass window) when you arrive, please use the phone on the desk in the lobby and dial 9-947-5940. If you reach voicemail, please leave a message and the Officer will come to Fuld Hall to assist you, generally within 20 minutes of your call. Please give the Officer your name, tell him that you are a participant in the Physics Program, and let him know you would like to pick up your apartment key. Please note, you are still required to come to Registration Sunday afternoon to receive your Welcome Packet and turn in your housing payment in the form of cash or a check made payable to the Institute for Advanced Study (no credit cards can be accepted.)

If you plan to arrive after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, or if travel delays unexpectedly cause you to arrive after 8:00 p.m., your registration materials and apartment key will be held with the Public Safety Officer at the Reception Desk located immediately on your right as you enter Fuld Hall (building with the clock tower). You also may ask the Officer to drive you with your luggage to your on-campus apartment. Please note, your housing payment would then be required to be turned in to the Program Business Office on Monday morning in the form of cash or a check made payable to the Institute for Advanced Study (no credit cards can be accepted) (see Business Office & Staff below).

Check Cashing Service

Personal and traveler's checks, up to $200, may be cashed at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall any weekday from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Common Rooms

The Fuld Hall Common Room is open throughout the day and night. There is an excellent selection of domestic and foreign newspapers and periodicals. Tea is served to the Institute community in this room from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is also a Common Room on the first floor in Bloomberg Hall. PiTP participants are welcome in all common areas of the Institute. Please remember these areas are for the use of everyone in the Institute community.

Computer Rooms & Personal Computer Equipment

Program participants will be given access to two different computer clusters in Bloomberg Hall. If you are using personal software in either location, do not install it on the hard disk of a PC. Only authorized Institute-purchased software should be installed on the hard disks. Programs currently installed on the Institute equipment in the computer rooms and in the offices are the property of the Institute and must not be copied. The copying of software is illegal. PLEASE - no food, beverages or smoking in computer rooms.

The first computer room available to participants will be the "Terminal Room," located in the basement of Bloomberg Hall. The room has been equipped with several computers and links for laptops. The room also offers a black and white printer, which should be used only for small, 2-sided print jobs. The second computer cluster available to participants will be in the "Physics Library" located on the second floor of Bloomberg Hall. Small, 2-sided print jobs may be sent to the black and white printer located across the hall. Both rooms will be open from 7:00 a.m. to midnight, 7-days a week. During weekday business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), if you need computing assistance you may dial ext. 8030 or visit the computing staff in their offices in the basement level of Bloomberg Hall (BH-23, BH-25 or BH-27).

Use of a personal computing device (e.g. laptop) on the Institute network requires completion of a small registration procedure for each network interface (wired or wireless).  Simply plug your computer into a network jack or connect to the wireless network, open a web browser, and a registration page will appear in which you will be asked to fill in some personal details as well as the MAC address of the device you are registering.  Information about finding the MAC address is available on the following web page:  http://regdhcp.net.ias.edu/reg/Help/mac.html.

For further details on the Institute network, you may visit http://www.net.ias.edu/internal/index.php.

Ground Transportation to Princeton

A map of the Princeton area, the IAS housing map, and the IAS campus map are available under the section entitled Maps below. The Institute for Advanced Study is located in central New Jersey approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of New York City and 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Philadelphia.

If traveling by plane, Newark International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport are both approximately one hour from Princeton. Both airports have train transportation from the airport to Princeton, however it is easier and more direct from Newark Airport. Also, the "Airporter" shuttle offers economical ground transportation service directly between Newark International Airport and the Institute and "NJ PASS" offers economical ground transportation service from Philadelphia Airport to the Institute. Detailed information about nearby airports and transportation to/from airports can be found on the Institute website at: http://www.admin.ias.edu/as/transport_airports.php

If traveling by train, you may take either AMTRAK to the "Trenton, New Jersey" station and then take NEW JERSEY TRANSIT into the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station, or you may take NEW JERSEY TRANSIT directly to the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station. From there, you may either take a taxi cab to the Institute (at a cost of about $20) or you may take the New Jersey Transit shuttle train (sometimes refered to as the "DINKY") from the "Princeton Junction, New Jersey" station to the "Princeton, New Jersey" station and walk to the Institute from there (about a 20-minute walk - click here for Walking Directions from Princeton Train Station).

If driving to the Institute, please see: http://www.admin.ias.edu/as/driving_directions.php  Participants will find free parking available near each apartment, as well as in Lot A on Campus (which is located next to both Bloomberg Hall and Wolfensohn Hall.)  No parking sticker is required.

Housing

Program participants will be housed in Institute apartments on a shared basis, as appropriate. Smoking is NOT permitted in the Institute apartments. Apartments are self-housekeeping, air-conditioned, have full baths (bathtub and shower) and have a full kitchen (including gas stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator, coffee-maker, teapot, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, and a basic supply of cooking utensils). Linens, towels, and blankets are provided. We do not provide alarm clocks or hairdryers in the units, however, and there are no televisions or radios in the apartments. (For students coming from outside of the United States, if you are bringing your own electrical appliances such as hairdryers and clocks, be certain to bring a power converter and plug adapter, also, that works for the United States' electrical system.) Apartments have computer connections in the den, as well as wireless capabilities. Please remember that only registered program participants are allowed to stay in the campus housing; no overnight guests will be permitted.

If you encounter any problems with your apartment during your stay, you may call Andy Compton in the housing office (ext. 8230). If calling in the evenings or on the weekend, please leave a voicemail and you can expect your concern to be addressed on the following business day. (In an emergency, please call the Public Safety Officer on duty, 9-947-5940). If you wish to exchange your used linens or towels for a clean set, or if you need additional cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet tissue or kleenex for your apartment, please go directly to the housing office (located in the Activity Center). The housing office will be open weekdays from 8:00-9:00 a.m. or from 4:00-5:00 pm. for these services.

Participants will be held responsible for any damages to an apartment that may occur during their stay at the Institute.

Apartment keys will be distributed at Registration. The apartments are within easy walking distance of Bloomberg Hall, the Dining Hall, Fuld Hall, and Wolfensohn Hall, and about a 20 minute walk from the center of Princeton, from Princeton University, and from the "Princeton" (also known as the "DINKY") train station.

Laundry Room

There is a self-service laundry facility in the Institute Housing Complex. To use the machines, you must first purchase a laundry card from the Reception Office in Fuld Hall (open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). The cards come in $5 or $10 amounts, plus a $3 deposit is required. If you return the card to the Reception Office before 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28th, you will get the deposit back, plus a refund of any money remaining on the card.

Dress Code

Dress is informal during the Program, however there will be one dinner hosted by the Institute's Director, Dr. Peter Goddard, and Mrs. Helen Goddard, for which you may wish to bring something less casual (but definitely no suits, ties or formal wear are needed.) You should pack a pair of sneakers or walking shoes for trips into town or walks in the Institute woods.  We also suggest you bring an umbrella, in case of inclement weather, and a sweater or light jacket to wear in case you find the temperature in the lecture hall cooler than you prefer.  We have arranged for access to a pool one evening, as well, so we encourage you to bring a swimsuit and sunscreen with you.

Institute Access Cards

Each participant in the Program in Theoretical Physics will receive an Institute Access Card and a Name Badge, both of which should be kept with you at all times. The Access Card identifies you as being part of the program and will allow you access into buildings after 5:00 p.m. The card will give you access to Bloomberg Hall, the Mathematics-Natural Sciences Library in Fuld Hall, the Activity Center and Laundry Room in the Housing Complex, and the Institute tennis courts. To use the card, place it face down in the card reader outside the entrance of each building or room. In some instances you may need to use the card to exit areas, as well.  Access Cards must be returned to the Program Business Office before you leave the Institute.

Library

The holdings of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library are presently held in four locations - on the second floor of Fuld Hall, in the Astrophysics and Physics libraries on the second floor of Bloomberg Hall, and in the basement of Bloomberg Hall. Please check the online catalog and journal list of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library for holdings and location. Your Institute Access Card will allow you 24-hour access to the various locations. Books and bound periodicals may be taken to an office on campus but must remain on Institute premises. Reference books and unbound journals should be used only in the library. To borrow a book, please sign both cards found in the back of the volume, indicate "PiTP06" next to your name, and leave the cards in the tray provided. Momota Ganguli (ext. 8181), Librarian, is in the Fuld Hall Library from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Please see her or Judy Wilson-Smith (ext. 8180), Library Assistant, if you need any help.

Maps

The following maps are available on-line, and can also be found in the Participant Welcome Packet that will be given to you at Registration:

Map of Institute Campus
Map of Institute Housing
Map of Princeton Area

Meals

Participants will be provided with lunch tickets that may be used on weekdays in the Institute Dining Hall.  Lunch tickets will entitle the holder to receive specified menu items at no charge; participants will be responsible for the cost of any food purchased in variation from, or in addition to, the items listed on the ticket. Lunch is served cafeteria style.

Participants are responsible for their own weekday breakfasts and dinners, and for all weekend meals (with the exception of one special Program Dinner to be held on Thursday, July 27).  If you wish, you may purchase weekday breakfasts in the Institute Dining Hall (cash purchases only; served between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.) There are many restaurants in the center of Princeton and on Route 1, a WaWa convenience store is located at the intersection of Alexander Road and University Place in Princeton, and a natural foods store, Wild Oats, is located at the north end of town, on Nassau Street. In addition, Institute apartments are equipped with full kitchens and a grocery shuttle service will be offered to McCaffrey Supermarket in the Princeton Shopping Center on the evenings of Monday, July 17 and Monday, July 24. For additional information on this grocery shuttle or on places to eat in the area, please see the Participant Welcome Packet distributed at Registration.

Medical (non-critical) Care

If you fall ill or experience a minor injury, and it is between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on a weekday, you are encouraged to consult with the Human Resources Staff in Fuld Hall (#102) (ext. 8243), who will be able to explain the medical treatment options available through the University Medical Center. If it is a weekday evening or on a weekend, you may either wait to consult Human Resources on the next business morning, or if you feel the need is critical, the closest Hospital Emergency Room is located at the University Medical Center at Princeton (253 Witherspoon Street, Princeton, 609-497-4431). Please note: an Emergency Room visit can be very expensive, and any costs incurred will be the responsibility of the participant or his/her insurance company. If the emergency is life threatening, you can call 9-911 from any Institute phone for medical and police assistance. You should have available your medical insurance card and information if you decide to visit the Emergency Room.

Messages and Notices

A PiTP Program bulletin board will be located in the corner of the Bloomberg Hall Common Room, and messages to participants, notices about special activities, etc. will be posted there. Please be certain to check the bulletin board a few times every day. Program schedule changes or other important announcements also will be posted on our web site.

Parking at the Institute

Participants will find free parking available near each apartment, as well as in Lot A on Campus (which is located next to both Bloomberg Hall and Wolfensohn Hall.)  No parking sticker is required.

There is a copier on the second floor of Fuld Hall which you then may use to make your copies. Please bring large or complex copying projects to the Program Business Office to determine if it would be best to have them done by the staff.

Recreation

The Institute's tennis courts are available to Program participants (you must provide your own racquets and tennis balls). The tennis courts are located behind 310 South Olden Lane, and can be accessed using your Institute Access Card.

A tentative schedule for the entire program is available on the Web at http://www.ias.edu/pitp/2006files/schedule2006rev.html, and you will receive a final schedule in your registration packet. All lectures will be given in Wolfensohn Hall unless otherwise noted. Any unexpected and last minute changes to the schedule will be posted on the website and a flyer placed on the Program bulletin board in Bloomberg Hall Common Room.

Telephone

The telephone in your apartment is for local calls. If you wish to make long distance calls, please use your personal cell phone, a calling card or credit card. Public pay phones are located in Fuld Hall and the Dining Hall. The Institute's house phones may be used to call extensions within the Institute campus, including the housing complex.  The Program Business Office number is ext. 8389 (the phone number is 609-734-8389 when calling from outside of the Institute).

Transportation in Princeton

The Institute provides free shuttle service between the Institute, the town of Princeton, and Princeton University. Scheduled service runs Monday through Friday, with an abbreviated schedule on Saturdays. The van also makes scheduled stops at the Princeton Shopping Center a couple of days a week, where a grocery store, a drug store, restaurants and other specialty shops are located. The van also makes stops a couple of days a week at Wal-mart and Wegman's grocery store, as well. An Institute shuttle schedule is included in your Registration Packet, and additional copies may be found in the Mail Information Center, at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall, and on-line at Shuttle Schedule.
