Writing TeX and LaTeX

Use WinEdt for writing and compiling TEX and L^ATEX⁶. There is a WinEdt Tutorial available online⁷, but in basic terms, you use WinEdt as follows:

1. Start WinEdt from its desktop icon.
2. Click File then New to create a new document.
3. Write your TEX or L^ATEX document.
4. To compile your document, click the TEX or L^ATEX button as appropriate.
5. To view the resulting DVI file in YAP, click the DVI Magnifying Glass button.
6. To create a postscript file, click the dvi2ps button.
7. To create a pdf file, click the dvi2pdf button or the pstopdf button.

Using TeX in Presentations

TeXPoint is a Powerpoint add-in that enables the easy use of L^ATEX symbols and formulas in Powerpoint presentations.

Setting Up TeXPoint

TeXPoint will generally work if you can see the TeXPoint menu in PowerPoint. If you do not see the TeXPoint menu, then do the following:

1. In PowerPoint, click Tools, then click Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Click Macro Security...
4. Change the Macro Security Level to Medium, then click OK.
5. Click OK again to return to PowerPoint.
6. Click Tools, then click Add-Ins...
7. Click Add New...
8. In the File name: space, type c:\program Files\texpoint\texpoint.ppa then click OK.
9. Click Enable Macros on the resulting security warning.
10. Click Close to close the Add-Ins... window and return to PowerPoint. Now, you are ready to start.

Using TeXPoint

In general, we recommend using Display Mode. Display mode is called by clicking TeXPoint, then by clicking New TeX Display. You can type the LaTeX you want to appear, then click Make bitmap.
