Creating a Personal Web Page

In order to make a personal web page, do the following:

1. Create a folder named public_html in your home directory.
2. Start Mozilla KompoZer.
3. Edit your home page as desired, and save the page as h:\index.html.
4. Next, you must set permissions so that the files are viewable on the Internet. Close KompoZer, then open My Documents. Right-click on public_html, then click the SecureShare tab. Check the boxes to set the permissions as follows: Owner (RWX), Group (R_X), Other (R_X). Click OK.
5. Next, open public_html and right-click index.html. Set the permissions to: Owner (RW_), Group (R__), Other (R__). Click OK.
6. Set the same permissions as shown above to any other file or folder you place in public_html.
7. View your web page at http://www.sns.ias.edu/~username, replacing username with your assigned username.
