DjVu

DjVu is a web-centric format and software platform for distributing documents and images. DjVu can advantageously replace PDF, PS, TIFF, JPEG, and GIF for distributing scanned documents, digital documents, or high-resolution pictures. DjVu content downloads faster, displays and renders faster, looks nicer on a screen, and consumes less client resources than competing formats. DjVu images display instantly and can be smoothly zoomed and panned with no lengthy re-rendering. DjVu image files typically have a .djvu file extension.

To start a DjVu viewer, enter the command:  djview
To open a particular file with DjVu:  djview filename.djvu

If you need to view .djvu files on the web, please use /usr/local/bin/netscape, which has a DjVu pre-loaded.

At SNS, we are running the DjVuLibre distribution. There are several packages included in DjVuLibre that can be used to create DjVu files from scanned images or from PostScript and PDF files. Please see the DjVuLibre documentation page for more information on these tools.

An additional and convenient way to create DjVu files is with the free Any2DjVu Server web site.
