Crossover Office is a software protocol that allows users to run certain Windows (primarily Office XP) applications from any of our Linux systems. These applications both display and run on the local desktop unlike Citrix where they run on a Windows terminal server.
The advantages of Crossover office over Citrix are that you can open Word etc. attachments directly e.g. from your mail client, and you can run it from your SNS Linux laptop. Since it is a Windows emulation, Crossover isn't as seamless as Citrix though, so it's best used for viewing and/or printing (Crossover should know about all your printers) files and for minor editing changes.
The available applications are listed below. We don't have as extensive an application suite available as from Citrix, or from our Windows PC's, because very few applications have been ported to the Crossover environment.
Any of the following applications can be run from Linux:
| Command | Description | |
| excel | Microsoft Excel. | |
| iexplore | Microsoft Internet Explorer. | |
| msaccess | Microsoft Access. | |
| outlook | Microsoft Outlook. | |
| powerpnt | Microsoft Powerpoint. | |
| winword | Microsoft Word. |
The first time you run a Crossover application it takes a little longer as files must be created under .cxoffice in your home directory.
