Citrix is a software protocol that allows users to run certain Windows applications from Linux. These applications display on the local desktop although they are in fact running on a Windows terminal server. Applications display in 24 bit color, with sound.
The available applications are the same as on the Windows PC's, with some minor exceptions. Some of the listed applications are not available on Citrix, either because these applications are already available under Linux (e.g. Mathematica, Maple, IDL, Matlab), or because they do not lend themselves well to being run in the Citrix environment. Nevertheless, if you think of an application you would like to see available, please let the computing staff know.
If you need to change your Windows password, you may do so in Citrix by selecting Start -> Settings -> Windows Security... Then click Change Password.
The following command will launch Citrix in linux (you will
first be asked to login before the application displays - use your
SNS Windows password for this): citrix
When you start Citrix as above, you will get a full Windows desktop displayed in your citrix window. Certain applications have been configured to run as "seamless applications". This means that the application will run without displaying the full Windows desktop, as if it was a native application running on your Linux system. In reality, it will still be runninig on our Citrix server.
When a seamless application starts, you will still be presented with a Windows login dialog. You must log in with your Windows password (not your Linux password. After logging in, if you have sound enabled, you will hear the typical Windows log in sound. When you are done using your application, please close it, as you are still using a Citrix license with a seamless application, and we have a limited number of Citrix licenses
The table below lists the applications that we have available as seamless applications and the command you need to start them:
| Application | Command |
|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat | acrobat |
| Adobe Illustrator | illustrator |
| Adobe Photoshop | photoshop |
| Endnote | endnote |
| Microsoft Word with Endnote | mswendnote |
Please Note: Citrix is for occassional use; opening an email attachment in Word format, composing a talk in Powerpoint for example. We have a limited number of licenses available, so please logout from Citrix if you aren't actively using it. If you find yourself using Citrix continuously; maybe running IE for all your browsing for example, you should consider switching to use a Windows PC.
