Windows Laptop Printing
The School of Natural Sciences currently has an LPR/LPD
protocol Unix Style print server available for printing from
personal computing devices. The server name is
print.sns.ias.edu.
To print from a Windows 2000/XP laptop and your laptop is
connected to the SNS network:
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control
Panel
- Double-click on Add/Remove Programs
- Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
Once this has completed you may now add printers to your
laptop.
- A Windows Component Wizard will appear, scroll down until
you find Other Network File and Print Services. Click on
the check box. Click on the Next button to install this
software. (Note: some windows installations you will require
your original Windows2000/XP CD)
- Click Start -> Settings ->
Printers
- Double-click Add Printer. Click Next
- Click Local printer, clear the Automatically detect my
printer
- Click Create a new port, and then click LPR Port
- On the next window enter print.sns.ias.edu for the
server name, and the printer name (for example bw1)you
wish to print to (for a list of printers click here)
- An Add Printer Wizard window will open. At this
time, you will need to select the manufacturer and the model of
the printer (you may need to go to the manufactures web site to
download the correct driver).
- click next through the next few windows to complete the
installation
- Repeat steps 5-12 to add additional printers
