Reaching the Institute for Advanced Study

By Train
From New York City, New Jersey Transit provides service from Penn Station to the Princeton Junction station, which is located outside the town of Princeton. Timetables of the Northeast Corridor line of the New Jersey Transit can be found here. From there you can take a taxi to the IAS (about $15) or the shuttle train, called the Dinky, connecting Princeton Junction to the smaller station located within the town of Princeton. You can purchase tickets either to Princeton Junction or to Princeton (if you want to use the "Dinky") at the Penn Station in Manhattan.
From Philadelphia, Amtrak has direct service to Princeton Junction. New Jersey Transit runs also from Philadelphia to Trenton where a connection can be made to Princeton Junction.
By Air
You can reach Princeton from all airports in the New York and Philadelphia area. Newark Airport is closest to Princeton and the easiest to travel to. Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia Airports are at the opposite side of New York city and require at least two hours from Princeton by car or longer by train or shuttle service. Philadelphia Airport is the closest international airport, but there are no regularly scheduled services between this airport and Princeton; however, it is possible to make a reservation with a limousine for private service.
To reach Princeton from the airport:
- From Newark airport, the easiest method is by train. From any airport terminal take the AirTrain directly to the new Newark Airport Train Station and from there use the New Jersey Transit service to Princeton Junction or Princeton (see above). The travel time between the terminals and Princeton is about one and a half hours.
- From Newark or Kennedy airports you can also use the Airporter van service. The cost from JFK Airport to Princeton is $34 per person; Newark Airport to Princeton is $21 per person (plus gratuity*). A recent schedule is available by clicking on the Airporter link. For payment, Airporter accepts cash, travelers checks, and credit cards (American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover). All credit card information must be given over the phone. Airporter drivers are not equipped to run credit cards on the shuttle. Reservations are required (call 1-800-385-4000). Online reservations are also possible at goairporter.com . Note that in rush hour there may be significant delays between Newark and Kennedy airports and the travel time to and from Kennedy may be as long as four hours.
- From all airports, Concorde Limousine offers private hired car service. Reservations must be made by telephone (1-888-4CONCORDE) in advance. Be sure to provide details concerning your airline and flight number, as well as the scheduled arrival time. Concorde limousine drivers meet their passengers outside the baggage claim area posted for their flight (or, for international arrivals, outside the US customs area).

By car

From the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) take exit 8a (Rt 32) west, towards Rt 130. Stay left on Rt 32 so that you turn left into Rt 130 (south). In a few hundred yards, at the second traffic light (past the gas station), turn right into Dey Rd. Again at the second traffic light (after about four miles) make a right onto Scudders Mill Rd. Stay left at the end of Scudders Mill Rd and join Rt 1 South. After about one mile, make a right into Alexander Rd (towards Princeton and not Princeton Junction) and continue into Alexander St. all the way to the end. Make a left into Mercer St., and at the second traffic light, another left into Olden Ln. In a few hundred yards, the Fuld Hall of the Institute for Advanced Study can be seen on the right. Rental car companies (Please note that SNS will not reimburse the costs of a rental car, although you may provide us with a copy of the invoice and we will contribute the equivalent ground transportation charges that are approved for reimbursement.) The following is a list of some of the rental car companies located in the Princeton area. It is recommended to call several companies to compare their daily, weekly, and monthly rates. Also inquire whether they deliver the car to your door (and pick it up later) and whether there is a fee for such a service. This is important since the offices of many of these rental-car companies are several miles away from the Institute.

Other train and bus schedules
